Dear Netflix, Please Don’t Screw This Up

Have you heard the news? Netflix is apparently planning to make a live action original series based on The Legend of Zelda!

And, honestly, I’m really not sure what to think. Perhaps it’s a combination of these reactions here:

OH MY GOOOOOOOOSH!!!!!!

OH MY GOOOOOOOOSH!!!!!!

NO NO NO WHY THEY'RE GOING TO SCREW EVERYTHING UP

NO NO NO WHY THEY’RE GOING TO SCREW EVERYTHING UP

But... what if they don't? What if it's really awesome?

But… what if they don’t? What if it’s really awesome?

WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO THINK?!

WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO THINK?!

Yeah, I think that about sums it up. *nods*

Many of you reading this are well aware that I’m a huge fan of The Legend of Zelda, and so I think it’s pretty easy for you guys to see why I’m conflicted about this. The announcement came out of absolutely nowhere — this is pretty much the LAST piece of Zelda-related news I was expecting to get anytime soon!

My first thought: I’m not going to pretend that I know a lot about how these things go, but I’d like to think that Nintendo has already given their seal of approval on the whole thing. Why else would the report come out? Going further, is Nintendo going to be involved at all in the writing? The casting? The production? Is Koji Kondo going to be involved with the score? SO MANY UNANSWERED QUESTIONS.

Now, if Nintendo is going to be somewhat involved, then I have to admit that I’m pretty hopeful. If done right, this could be really good! But it also brings up other questions. For one thing, in the Zelda games, Link is a silent protagonist. It’s assumed that he does have the ability to talk, given the fact that you, playing as him, are able to speak to NPCs in the game. But we never actually hear him form coherent sentences (nor do we hear anyone else, but we do see text boxes of their dialogue). So how are they going to handle Link in the Netflix series? Is he going to talk? Would that be considered too jarring for fans? But if he’s silent, how are the writers going to keep him interesting to people who aren’t familiar with Zelda as a whole?

So yeah, those are just a couple of my thoughts on this. We hardly know anything yet. So, in short, I do have some concerns/wonderings/fears. But I’d like to be optimistic — if they pull this off, it ought to be really entertaining, plus it’ll bring even more people to the Zelda games (I assume, anyway). I guess only time will tell!

Just one more thing, though . . . Netflix? Remember when people other than Nintendo were given permission to use the Zelda characters for their own stories — in their own games and in a short-lived cartoon? Remember that? Well, please don’t go the same route that those people went.

  1. THIS. ALL OF IT.

My brother told me the news yesterday and I just sat there for several seconds stunned. I mean, how does one even respond to such news? A live action Zelda series???

I had the exact same thought as you. How are they going to pull off Link? A talking Link just doesn’t work for me. He’s always been our silent hero. But, I mean, it’d be awkward and weird for him to be silent in a TV show. But Link talking doesn’t feel…right somehow. It messes up his whole persona to me.

But not only that, a live action Zelda anything never really…works. When people cosplay Link it looks a bit awkward, if you know what I mean. The Zelda games are really just meant to be animated in my humble opinion. It just doesn’t work any other way.

So…I don’t know. I’m very wary of the whole thing. But, who knows, it could be awesome. Despite my shock, I’m quite curious about the whole thing. I’m sure it’ll be…interesting anyway. Eheh.

And oh my word, that cartoon! XDDD Don’t even get me started. See? Talking Link just…no.
